Workplace Violence and Harassment –Worker Information and Instruction
MESSAGE:
Please be advised that recent changes to Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act through Bill 168 (Violence and Harassment in the Workplace 2009), have come into force as of June 15, 2010. Workplaces in Ontario are now required to have the necessary policies, programs, measures and procedures in place with respect to workplace violence and harassment. The board has approved an interim policy with respect to Workplace Violence which is available in the policy section of the boards’ internet website. Workplace harassment provisions of the legislation have been incorporated into the Respectful Working and Learning Environments policy directive. Both of these documents are now required by law to be posted on your Health and Safety Bulletin Board.
The legislative changes also require that employers provide workers with instruction and information regarding workplace violence and harassment policies and procedures. To this end, the board has prepared a presentation for your use. Please use the link below to access the presentation. Principals are required to share this presentation with staff on the June 30th professional activity days. Managers and Supervisors are required to share this presentation with all their staff as soon as is practicable.

Accessibility Standards

Under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA), businesses and organizations that provide goods and services to people in Ontario have to meet certain accessibility standards in five areas:
Þ Customer Service;
Þ Transportation;
Þ Information and Communications;
Þ Built Environment; and
Þ Employment.
Ontario’s first accessibility standard, the Customer Service Standard, came into effect on January 1, 2008. The Standard states what businesses and other organizations in Ontario must do to make the provision of their goods and services more accessible to people with disabilities.
The Ontario Educational Services Corporation (OESC-CSEO), in partnership with representatives from school boards across Ontario, developed exemplars for boards to assist in the development of policies and procedures related to the Customer Service Standard. In addition, OESC-CSEO and partners have also developed training modules which will assist us with the training requirements of the Standard.
This training, for all HWDSB employees, will help us to ensure greater awareness and responsiveness to the needs of persons with disabilities.
By February 15 2010, principals and managers must ensure that all staff in their buildings or departments (including custodial and secretarial staff) have viewed the training modules for Customer Service, which are available at:
http://oesc.apandrose.com/en_CA/welcome/ .
The complete training takes approximately 40 minutes.
When you have completed this training, please let me know by email.
